LYNCHBURG, Va. – One man is working to clear up confusion over a new law.

As of Thursday, cannabis is now legal for people 21 and up to have, use and grow in Virginia. However, unless a doctor has signed off on a prescription, there’s no legal way to buy it.

Many in Lynchburg have come to call Jonathan Zinski Virginia’s Johnny Appleseed of cannabis.

“I am very happy about it,” he says.

By day, he’s a customer service rep for a major corporation. By night, he’s a guy pursuing a passion — running a small hemp farm about 20 miles outside of town.

“It’s a huge grey area right now,” he says. “They sped up the process of legalizing possession and use.”

In the Commonwealth, you can now legally have and use cannabis. There’s just one problem.

“They still haven’t figured out buying and selling,” Zinski says.

The only way to legally get seeds is to get them for free, so that’s what Zinski set out to do.

After spending countless hours seeking donations from major cannabis producers, he passed out thousands of seeds to local retailers to give to customers.

“Unfortunately, I can’t be growing anything large scale with THC yet,” he says. “I would love to see how the law pans out as far as being more fair to smaller growers, people who don’t have money.”

It will be three more years before you can buy and sell in the commonwealth. Zinski says we can’t wait. He wants to get seeds into as many hands as possible.

“I want to give people an avenue that they can legally grow, they can legally obtain seeds and they can do it in a responsible way.”

Group plans to hand out free seeds to new marijuana growers in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. — It will be legal to grow up to four marijuana plants in your home when Virginia’s marijuana laws change on July 1, 2021.

However, it will remain illegal to buy or sell marijuana seeds from which to grow the plants.

To get seeds into the hands of people interested in growing plants, the Virginia Marijuana Justice (VAMJ) is giving away thousands of cannabis seeds at spots around Virginia.

“We have seen first-hand the smiles and gratitude that a free seed giveaway brings to first-time growers, and it’s pretty special,” Adam Eidinger, co-founder of DCMJ, said in a statement. “However, we also know from our experience that so many people do not realize that they can grow cannabis at home legally. Some people didn’t know about the new law, as it pertains to home cultivation, until our volunteers handed them a free packet of seeds. So there is a significant educational component to our giveaways.”

Looping around a wellness center in downtown Roanoke, hundreds of people were ready to get their hands on free cannabis seeds.

ROANOKE, Va. – Looping around a wellness center in downtown Roanoke, hundreds of people were ready to get their hands on free cannabis seeds.

16 West Marketplace was packed with people waiting to select a packet of seeds at WellNest Roanoke.

Across the Commonwealth, seeds are being handed out for free since there is no legal way to buy them in the state just yet.

Virginia Seeds representatives helped educate and explain to people how to grow the seeds and what they can be used for.

“It’s just important for us to be able to meet people where they are because the public has all kinds of different needs,” WellNest Roanoke Owner Valarie Angle said. Whether that’s emotional, medical, spiritual. We want to be there for them. So, this is a great opportunity to do that.”

A limit of 400 packets of seeds were handed out in less than six hours.

Angle said as cannabis becomes more of a tool in holistic healings she encourages the use of products and welcomes them in her store.
