Few CBD brands are better-known than Charlotte’s Web, which gained international attention for how it helped a young Dravet syndrome sufferer enjoy a better quality of life. It is one of the few CBD brands that cultivates its own hemp, and it takes great pride in ensuring its products are among the best around.

Who Is Charlotte’s Web?
Charlotte’s Web is a family-owned company founded by the seven Stanley Brothers: Josh, Austin, Jared, Jordan, John, Jesse, and Joel, in 2011. With its HQ in Boulder, Colorado, CW cultivates the hemp used in its substantial range of products.
It quickly became one of the best-known brands in the CBD industry due to how it helped Charlotte Figi, a young girl with Dravet’s syndrome. Charlotte’s Web got so big that in 2018, it was listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange. The brand acquired Abacus Health in 2020 and expanded into Israel and Canada the following year.
However, it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for CW. Its share price plummeted as COVID massively impacted the CBD industry. Nonetheless, Charlotte’s Web remains a huge name, and we’re delighted to have the chance to review its products.

WayofLeaf’s Top 3 Favorite Charlotte’s Web Products
The range of Charlotte’s Web products keeps growing to the point where if we did in-depth reviews of everything, it would take an hour to read this guide! Instead, we chose to run the rule over three of the brand’s most popular products.
1 – Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil (Original Formula 100ml – 50mg CBD/ML)
CW began with its Original Formula but has expanded its range significantly. These days, you can buy Charlotte’s Web CBD oil in the following concentrations:
- 7mg CBD/ml
- 17mg CBD/ml
- 25mg CBD/ml (Starter Size, THC Free)
- 50mg CBD/ml
- 60mg CBD/ml
However, we felt that it was best to analyze the product that “started an industry,” according to Charlotte’s Web. Unlike the rest of its range, which utilizes CO2 extraction, the Original Formula uses alcohol extraction and involves creating labor-intensive small batches. According to the brand, the result is a premium-quality oil that contains a huge concentration of phytocannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other compounds per serving.
The Original Formula contains 50mg of CBD per ml of liquid, and you can purchase a 30ml or 100ml bottle. Two flavor options exist, Olive Oil (Natural) and Mint Chocolate.
The mint chocolate flavor has a pleasant, sweet yet refreshing taste and is certainly palatable. It begins with a subtle hint of mint chocolate, and unlike other brands, CW manages to avoid creating an overpowering mint taste. There’s a slight hemp aftertaste, but nothing that should put you off.
You can’t argue with 50mg of CBD per ml. One should feel a heightened sense of relaxation, and most users are generally pleased with the effects. Charlotte’s Web uses high-quality hemp in all its products, so we aren’t surprised that this product is as good as advertised.
The brand’s visible in-house testing of the 100ml bottle showed a CBD content of 57mg per ml, well above what is claimed. The total cannabinoid content is an impressive 66mg, including almost 4mg of CBC per ml. The COA shows evidence of testing for pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
Charlotte’s Web provides updated lab reports; all you have to do is enter the lot number of your product on the “Batch Reports.” This is good news because the COA available on the site is dated November 2019.
THC Free† CBD Oil: Everything You Need to Know
Charlotte’s Web is thrilled to announce the launch of our new THC Free† CBD oil. It’s a great option for those that want to try CBD and are averse to THC or need to take measures to limit their exposure to THC. While all hemp-derived CBD oil products contain less than 0.3% THC (the compound associated with the “high” of marijuana), Charlotte’s Web TM THC Free† CBD Oil contains less than 0.01% THC. Our THC Free† CBD products are designed to help you enjoy the many benefits of CBD while limiting THC intake.
Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of CBD without THC when compared to other CBD products and why you might want to try it.
What is THC Free† CBD Oil?
THC Free† CBD oil is just like it sounds it’s CBD hemp extract oil with the THC removed. But unlike a CBD isolate, our THC Free formula is made to retain the additional cannabinoids and plant compounds from hemp, many with their own health benefits. Because CBD is derived from hemp, or the Cannabis sativa L plant, there may be minute quantities of THC found in most CBD products. Charlotte’s Web continues to be a pioneer by developing a high-tech, innovative refinement process to remove THC from a full-spectrum hemp extract. We are setting industry standards for innovation, safety and eco-friendly techniques that do not involve the use of toxic, petroleum-derived solvents commonly used for manufacturing broad-spectrum hemp extracts.
The result is CBD oil that is THC free†, which is often termed “broad-spectrum hemp extract”. Until recently, “broad-spectrum hemp extract” was an ambiguous term, but the U.S. Hemp Authority has now provided a definition to help educate consumers and manufacturers alike: “Broad Spectrum Extract is hemp extract that has been intentionally processed to remove THC such that the quantified THC has been deemed non-detectable.” This means that our natural range of cannabinoids stays intact except for THC being removed.
Based on this definition, broad-spectrum extracts cannot be formulated from the addition of multiple isolated cannabinoids or terpenes from other plants. That may seem like an odd thing to do, yet it’s how some brands are trying to artificially assemble a “Broad Spectrum Extract.” Charlotte’s Web performed in-house testing on some top broad-spectrum CBD brands and found that some did not qualify as broad-spectrum as defined by U.S. Hemp Authority because they did not contain cannabinoids other than CBD, or had added terpenes from alternate plant sources.
Charlotte’s Web TM THC free† CBD supports overall health and wellness, provides you with a sense of calm for focus, provides support for healthy sleep cycles, aids in recovery from exercise-induced inflammation, and provides relief from everyday stress* with the added benefit of being free of THC.
How is CBD Oil without THC Different from Full-Spectrum CBD?
A full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the phytocannabinoids that are naturally found in the hemp plant, including CBD, terpenes (the molecules responsible for plant aromas), essential oils, and the other cannabinoids found in hemp. In the mix of cannabinoids may be a trace amount of THC, which is required to be below 0.3% in the U.S.
On the other hand, a CBD oil without THC, means there is no detectable THC in the product, specifically less than 0.01% or 100ppm. Because it’s not yet possible to grow a hemp plant with zero THC, we use our innovative technology for the refinement process to ensure THC is removed to less than 0.01%. The exact amount in each bottle can be seen in a Certificate of Analysis, available on our website. Read our blog post What is a Certificate of Analysis to learn more.
Think of Charlotte’s Web TM THC Free† CBD oil as a full-spectrum hemp extract without the THC which makes it a broad-spectrum CBD oil. This is superior to many other brand’s THC free CBD oils because due to our innovative technology, we are able to capture more of the important compounds such as flavonoids, other cannabinoids (like CBG and CBC) and terpenes than our competitors. The body’s endocannabinoid system responds better to a tincture with all these beneficial compounds due to something called the entourage effect, a type of synergistic activity.
Why Does Our THC Extraction Processes Create The Best THC Free CBD?
Charlotte’s Web has developed a sophisticated extraction method and processing technology called Supercritical Fluid Chromatography. This method retains much of the naturally occurring hemp compounds while removing the THC. The process is eco-friendly and produces a true broad-spectrum extract. This process is remarkable when compared to processes that other brands use, which tend to strip out most of the beneficial compounds in the process of removing THC.
Here are the other ways that THC gets extracted from hemp, and why they may not be ideal.
This extraction process uses chromatography combined with petroleum-based solvents. These solvents are removed, but residue is possible. Depending on usage, over time these residues can build up in one’s system with unknown effects.
Flash Chromatography Methods
These methods use methanol and water rather than CO2, which requires a lot of energy and creates much more waste to remove from the final product. Flash chromatography is less selective and may remove more beneficial compounds.
The Destructive Approach
This low-tech process degrades the THC to CBN using heat which is not precise. Some of the THC turns into unknown THC-like compounds that testing does not detect in the product but could cause a person to fail a drug test.
The Dilution Process
This process dilutes the full spectrum hemp extract to undetectable THC levels, then spikes it with CBD isolate. This lowers the amount of minor cannabinoids and terpenes. The result is a formula that more closely resembles CBD isolate. In some cases, brands will add in other isolated cannabinoids and terpenes, which therefore disqualifies those products from being called “broad spectrum”.
Why Would Someone Choose THC Free† CBD Oil?
While full-spectrum CBD is non intoxicating, some consumers prefer not to ingest any form of THC. Charlotte’s Web TM THC Free† CBD oil is a great option for those who want to enjoy all of the benefits of hemp and its many beneficial plant compounds without worrying about consuming THC.
One of the most significant reasons someone may choose THC Free† CBD oil is to take precaution, so their CBD oil won’t trigger a positive result on a drug test. While the THC amounts in a CBD oil may be negligible in how they affect the user, it’s possible the THC in full-spectrum CBD oil could show up on a drug test depending on a variety of factors, such as a person’s weight, metabolism, genetics, and how much they take.
How Does CBD Oil Without THC Affect Drug Testing?
According to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is legal to cultivate and process into CBD products in the U.S. as long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC. Employers don’t conduct drug screenings for CBD, but they do screen for THC, which has psychoactive properties. There is a risk that even the small amount of THC present in a full spectrum CBD product can show up in these screenings and cause a positive test. However, because our THC Free† CBD oil has no detectable THC you can take it with very little risk to your screening results, this is because THC Free† CBD has trace amounts of THC less than 0.01% or 100ppm!
How Long Does THC Stay in Your System?
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it’s possible for drug tests to detect THC several days to several weeks after use. If you work at a job with drug testing or are applying for a job that requires drug testing, you may wish to choose only THC Free† CBD oil.
Jobs in various industries test for THC, both to screen candidates during the hiring process and at random intervals. According to American Addiction Centers, industries that are more likely to test for THC include government, healthcare and hospitals, manufacturing, automotive, transportation, logistics, private security, aerospace, defense, construction and first responders like firefighters and law enforcement. However, any employer may use drug testing in pre-employment and random screenings, so it’s important to be aware of the properties of the CBD oil you consume.

What you need to know about Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil
Before I get into the full Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil Review, here are some key facts and answers to frequently asked questions about Charlotte’s Web and their oils:
- What is CBD Oil? CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a phytocannabinoid found in hemp and known for supporting body and mind in a variety of ways. CBD specifically comes from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. (Not to be confused with oil that comes from hemp seeds, which contain no cannabinoids.)
- How much CBD is in Charlotte’s Web Oil? Charlotte’s Web offers a range of concentrations, which are described as mg/ml and currently they offer 7, 17, 50, and 60 mg/ml concentrations. The CBD Oil we have used is the 50 mg/ml concentration, which is their ‘original’ blend.
- How much THC is in Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil? As Charlotte’s Web products are CBD and not marijuana, they are all extracted from hemp (rather than marijuana) plants and contain less than 0.3% THC and so won’t get you high (THC is the compound found in higher concentrations in marijuana).
- Is Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil Full Spectrum? Yes – Charlotte’s Web is a whole-plant hemp extract with a full spectrum of phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.
- Is Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil legal? Yes, it is legal in all 50 US States and many other countries. The CBD oil is available without prescription in the US, it is classed as a food supplement, not a drug.
- Is Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil organic? Their products are not organic-certified, but the pesticides and herbicides they use are 100% organic.
- What flavor CBD oils are available from Charlotte’s Web? We are using the Mint Chocolate flavor. Other available flavors at the time of writing include Lemon Twist, Orange Blossom, and Olive Oil.

What is Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil good for? Does using CBD Oil help with general anxiety?
CBD Oil is reported to offer a wide range of benefits to many people. This sounds vague, and that’s because, well, it is, but commonly-reported benefits of CBD oil are reducing general anxiety, better sleep and an increased sense of calmness. I have used Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil and CBD Gummies and my personal experience of this is explained in all the reviews listed here.
How does Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil help with running recovery?
Ok, so now we are getting into the specifics. Charlotte’s Web sent me some of their CBD Oil and CBD Gummies to try out and see how I found it benefiting my overall sense of well-being, as well as my running. I have been using their oil in the dropper format every evening and monitoring how I have been feeling in terms of speed of recovery from running and other physical training.
Using Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil has helped me in three ways:
- Relief from Exercise-Induced Inflammation: One of the stated benefits of CBD is that it helps provide relief from exercise-induced inflammation and I have indeed noticed that I recover quickly following hard training efforts. It is typical to feel sore and maybe have tender/puffy feet and ankles a day or two after a hard long run or other training efforts. However, this has been minimal over the past few weeks, despite continuing to train at the same level as I did previously. My body has felt more rested and less sore, and so I’ve actually felt more up for increasing my training volume.
- Better sleep: Another contributing factor is that CBD oil is reported to help you sleep better. I do believe that the quality of my sleep has improved – which is not only good for you in general, but also getting enough good-quality sleep when recovering from an intense physical effort helps your recovery. How do I know this? Well, I don’t know about you, but when I’ve been on a long run or raced an ultramarathon, my legs can be particularly hot and make me restless when I try to sleep that night – even if I’m really tired. I haven’t had any interrupted sleep and I am attributing at least some of this to taking Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil supplement.
- Increased sense of calm: I do feel calmer than I did before using Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil. Of course, a sense of relative calmness is intangible and therefore a difficult thing to measure, but I’ve found that I get less worked-up at the start of a race (ah, the old ‘pre-race nerves’), which indicates I have a lower propensity for general anxiety than I have experienced at other events in the past.
How do you take Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil? What is the dosage?
Charlotte’s Web CBD oil is dispensed via the dropper that comes with the bottle. The dosage depends on your needs and there is little guidance on how much to take. It is recommended by the company that you start off with 1/4 of a dropper per day, and increase it by 1/4 each day (so on day 4 you would be at 1 full dropper per day) until you feel the effects and stay at that daily dosage. I have been taking one full dropper per day.
I don’t know whether it makes a difference whether you take your CBD oil in the morning, or evening, or divide it throughout the day. However I chose to take mine at the end of the day, before brushing my teeth, so it was in my routine and presumably most effective at night when I was resting and recovering.
The Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil I have been using is the Original 50mg/ml concentration in Chocolate Mint flavor.
What does Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil taste like?
I have the Mint Chocolate flavor CBD oil. To be honest, I don’t particularly like the taste. It’s not a turn-off but doesn’t taste like Mint or Chocolate to me. For my next batch I will go for either the ‘plain’ Olive Oil flavor or try the orange or lemon flavor, as orange and lemon seem like they would blend better with the CBD oil’s taste than the Mint Chocolate option.
If you’re sensitive to the taste, Charlotte’s Web recommends mixing the oil with something else, such as in a drink, if that is your preference, rather than necessarily dropping the oil directly into your mouth. There are also other ways to take CBD supplements, including CBD Gummies, and CBD Capsules.
What is the difference between CBD Oil and CBD Gummies?
Charlotte’s Web recently introduced three varieties of CBD gummies, called ‘Sleep’, ‘Calm’ and ‘Recovery’. The gummies contain 10mg per serving, and have the advantage over CBD Oil in that:
- It is easy to get the dosage consistent each time
- Gummies are easily portable and don’t risk leaking if you take them traveling or with you during the day
- You may well prefer the taste of the CBD Gummies over the CBD Oil.
The Calm CBD Gummies I have been using are Lemon Lime flavor and taste like gummy candy, so I really enjoy taking them. If you are new to CBD supplements then for these reasons CBD gummies may be a good way to go, although as the concentration of CBD is lower than with the oil, you may not experience enough of an effect, depending on your needs.
The gummies taste great and I had to restrain myself from eating more than the recommended dosage of two per day!
Charlotte’s Web CBD Capsules
Another option worth a mention is the CBD Capsules. These are in a liquid-containing pill form, so there is no taste, you just swallow them (ideally with water). The other main advantage of the Capsules over the Gummies is that you can get capsules in 15mg or 25mg/ml, whereas the Gummies are 10mg/ml. The capsules don’t, however, include the additional plant-based supplements used to differentiate the Calm, Sleep and Recovery Gummies, they are solely CBD supplements, so it depends on what you’re looking for.
Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil Review: How much does it cost?
When it comes to buying CBD Oil, it can be overwhelming now given the range of companies offering similar-looking products. Our view, when it comes to food supplements, which are not as strictly monitored as medical supplements, is to look for the most trusted and reputable companies to help ensure you are getting the product you are paying for – otherwise what is the point, if it isn’t going to work as intended, you don’t know what else is in the product (or has been used in its processing) or you have to use more than the ideal dosage to start to feel any effects?
With that said, Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil is one of the more expensive options on the market, reflecting this is a high-quality, well-regarded and widely trusted product.
Prices range from $39.99 for the 7mg/ml CBD oil. The 30ml bottle of the Original Formula CBD Oil that we have been using costs $149.99.
And the CBD gummies we use are the Lemon Lime flavor Calm CDB Gummies, which cost $54.99 and are delicious.
If you’re kicking-off your CBD journey it may also be worth checking out the CBD bundles Charlotte’s Web offers, as you can make good savings vs buying products separately, and they explain why certain items are paired together. The Workout Hard, Recover Harder bundle includes recovery CBD gummies and oil.
