All the powerful benefits of CBD, but derived from citrus peels, not cannabis or hemp. It’s the perfect daily partner for a more balanced life! CBD and drug tests sometimes don't mix. But since Peels CBD oil is made from orange peels, not hemp, there's no chance I'll flunk my test.
Peels CBD Review (October 2021)
Peels is a brand that makes CBD out of orange peels instead of hemp. The company offers third-party tested, THC-free CBD oil and is working on more products.
Bottom line: Peels is an innovative option if you’re looking for hemp-free, THC-free CBD oil.
- Made from orange peels rather than hemp/cannabis
- Completely free of all traces of THC
- Comprehensive third-party testing
- Only one CBD oil strength option
Overall Rating: 4/5
Product Lineup 3/5
We’d like to see more CBD oil strengths as well as other products but we like the company’s innovation.
Peels’ products cost similar to the average price point for CBD. But you’re still getting reasonable value because of the unique, hemp-free production method.
Hemp Quality 4/5
Peels uses orange peels instead of hemp to make CBD. We’d like to see more information about the precise process, like where the orange peels are sourced from.
Third-Party Testing 5/5
The company provides complete, up-to-date potency and contaminant third-party test results. The test reports confirm that you’re getting as much CBD as advertised.
Customer Service & Reputation 4/5
Peels is a relatively young brand but its customer reviews are positive.
Table of Contents
Founded by ex-NFL player Chris Hetherington in 2019, Peels stands out for making CBD oil from orange peels rather than hemp. This makes it a great option for people who want to completely avoid cannabis and THC.
The company uses a unique process called Cyclic Terpene Assembly (CTA) to turn terpenes found in orange peel into cannabidiol (CBD). The terpenes are combined with the natural compound olivetol under heat and pressure to create 99.5%+ pure CBD.
Another advantage of using orange peels is sustainability. Growing hemp requires significant amounts of water and other resources, whereas orange peels are typically discarded as waste.
- Terpenes: aromatic plant compounds with a wide variety of beneficial properties (1).
- Minor cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, and other beneficial cannabinoids found in smaller amounts than CBD. For hemp, THC also counts as a minor cannabinoid.
- Hemp: non-intoxicating cannabis variety with high CBD and low THC levels (less than 0.3%).
- Full-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract containing multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This form of CBD is about 4 times more potent than pure CBD (2).
- Broad-spectrum: whole-plant hemp extract similar to full-spectrum CBD, but with THC removed (may contain trace amounts).
- CBD isolate: pure CBD with all other hemp compounds removed.
Peels CBD Product Lineup
For now, Peels only has one product: a pure CBD oil. But the company is working on releasing more products in the near future.
Peels CBD Oil
|CBD Potency||33 mg/ml|
|Volume||30 ml ml|
|Total CBD||1000 mg|
|Cost per mg CBD||$0.10|
|Type||Isolate (made from orange peel)|
|Third-Party Test||View report|
Peels’ CBD oil contains 1000 mg of pure CBD derived from orange peels, giving it a medium-level strength of 33 mg/ml. It’s dissolved in coconut MCT oil and flavored with a mild, natural citrus flavor.
Although we liked this product, we’d like to see more strength options, such as 100 mg/ml and higher.
The easiest way to compare the value of CBD products is to divide the total cost by the amount of CBD. For example, if you have a 1500 mg CBD oil that costs $100, its price per milligram (mg) of CBD would be 100/1500 = $0.07.
Peels’ CBD oil costs about $0.10 per mg of CBD, which is considered average. But that’s to be expected because making CBD from orange peels is more costly than extracting it from cannabis. So you’re still getting fairly good value.
Hemp Source and Extraction Process
Instead of using hemp, Peels makes CBD from the terpenes found in orange peels. The resulting pure crystalline CBD is identical to the CBD you’d find in cannabis.
There are several advantages to this. For one, it’s a good option for people who have a negative view of cannabis.
It’s also completely free of THC, whereas hemp-derived products can contain trace amounts even if the THC is removed to levels undetectable by tests.
Peels sends its products for third-party testing at Anresco Laboratories, a food, cannabis, and medical device-testing lab from California. They’re tested for potency, pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
Third-Party Test Results
The third-party test results show that Peels’ CBD oil is free of contaminants and THC. It contains 38.9 mg of CBD per gram, which is equivalent to about 35.8 mg/ml.
That’s 8.5% higher than the label (33 mg/ml or 1000 mg in total), which is accurate since it’s less than a 10% difference.
Shipping & Returns
Peels offers free shipping throughout the U.S. It has a standard 30-day return policy for unopened items.
Customer Service & Reputation
Peels is a relatively new company so it doesn’t have the strong reputation of established CBD brands. However, the few customer reviews of its CBD tincture are positive and we had a good experience trying out their products.
Our Verdict: Good Option for People Who Avoid Cannabis
Peels fills a specific niche in the CBD market: CBD products for people who dislike hemp and cannabis. It’s also a good option for those who want to be 100% certain they avoid THC.
Additionally, the company ticks the right boxes in terms of its reasonable pricing and detailed, up-to-date third-party testing.
Having said that, we want to see more CBD oil strengths. A potency of 33 mg/ml may not be enough for many people, especially when it’s pure rather than full-spectrum CBD.
For example, a CBD tincture with 100 mg/ml or 3000 mg in total would be a good addition.

This is Highly Recommend, a column dedicated to what people in the food industry are obsessed with eating, drinking, and buying right now.
It always was a dream of mine to become a flight attendant, and recently, that dream transformed into reality. The process is rigorous, the competition is steep, and after multiple rounds of interviews, I received a job offer conditional on passing a four-to-six-week training course. But to get to the training course, I first have to pass a background check and a drug test by the Department of Transportation.
Flight attendants and commercial truck drivers, pilots, train engineers, ship captains, and others performing safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry must abide by DOT rules. That means my system must be clear of a litany of substances including THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical compound in marijuana that gives people a high. Easy, right?
Not so easy, actually. Or straightforward. As a naturally anxious person, I often use cannabidiol (CBD) to relax, especially in the darker winter months and when I’m having trouble sleeping. From CBD honey to CBD gummies, I’ve tried them all. The best way to describe the effect of CBD? It creates a softened world without the high of THC. Although there isn’t much concrete research around CBD, it certainly works to make life more manageable for me.
Many CBD products claim to have little or no THC, but mislabeling has been a consistent issue in the industry since there’s no FDA certification necessary to make the claim. For example, a 2020 FDA study showed that nearly half of the CBD products tested contained THC.
“There is, unfortunately, a great variability in the CBD products being sold, including mislabeling of the actual amount of CBD, contamination with THC, and even [contamination with] heavy metals and insecticides,” says neuroscientist Yasmin Hurd, M.D. and director of the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai, which has ongoing clinical trials studying the neurobiological effects of CBD.
Were CBD and drug tests incompatible? Would I fail the test even if I didn’t intentionally consume THC? I went to the DOT website to investigate and I found that any CBD product with over 0.3% THC will trigger a positive result. So while I still believe that hemp and cannabis-derived CBD have a great deal of potential for healing pain and easing anxiety, consuming them is not worth the risk of losing a job or having a positive drug test follow me for the rest of my career.
Enter Peels. Founded by former NFL player Chris Hetherington, Peels CBD oil is bio-identical to pure hemp-based CBD oil, but it’s made from orange oil extracted from discarded orange peels—part of the company’s attempt to reduce the environmental impact of the CBD industry. While CBD is only naturally found in the cannabis plant, Peels uses a proprietary molecular reconstruction process to duplicate the structure of CBD molecules using a compound—orange terpene—that occurs naturally in orange peels. The result is an oil that is molecularly identical to CBD oil but without the THC, heavy metals, or residues often found in traditional CBD.

Peels CBD Oil
The Peels CBD oil comes in a vibrant orange glass dropper jar, and unlike many other CBD products I’ve tried, there’s no skunky aftertaste. In fact, the oil tastes like an orange creamsicle, dense and easy to swallow. Their certifications from the Clean Label Project give me an added sense of security, knowing that I can soothe my anxiety and irregular sleep patterns without ingesting something unknown.
As someone who often travels on the job and off, I bring my Peels CBD with me to help me sleep when I’m jet lagged and to ease my anxiety in new environments. Because it’s 100% cannabis and THC-free, not only do I not have to worry about Peels CBD and drug tests, I also know I won’t run afoul of cannabis laws that vary from state to state. And a reminder from your friendly flight attendant—at 1 fluid ounce, the bottle is also TSA-friendly.
